None to Run: Wk 2 Day 2 + The zero drop shop calf nightmare

Updates of my run and thoughts on zero drop shoes.

None to Run: Wk 2 Day 2 + The zero drop shop calf nightmare

OK today was a rough one.

Could be one of two things (or maybe even both):

  1. The weight training I did yesterday — though I haven't been feeling sore in my lower body while my arms are.
  2. The Xero Speedforce zero drop shoes I started wearing today — my calves were dying.
My Xero Speedforce

I'm of two minds on whether I return these shoes are not. (More like drop the idea of zero drop altogether.)

On one hand, I heard that zero drop shoes help with posture, reduces injury, etc. I'm all for starting on the right foot (no pun intended). That and I've been a SAHM wife the past five years — so my feet are practically used to being barefoot and wearing zero drop everything. Maybe I just need to ease into it?

On the other hand, I hated the run today. I was practically dragging my feet on the ground. It wasn't enjoyable at all.

And yes, running is not always enjoyable and it's a lot of work to train, but again, I don't think it should hurt like that. And I don't think my shoes should discourage me from doing my runs.

Not to mention my calves are naturally developed. You'd think I'd never skipped leg day. I stretched.

So I'm leaning towards sending it back. Or at least limiting its use to my cross-training or strength training days.

Seriously I don't even know why I got the shoes. I'm a beginner. I shouldn't be complicating my runs. Get a shoe that fits well and works (my Brooks Ghost 14), and then run. Maybe when I've finished the None to Run program then I can look at other shoes.

All in all though, despite the torture, I finished my run.

And at this point I think that's what ultimately counts.

I'm a runner after all 😉
