Embracing the imperfections of training
Because life laughs at the face of our plans.
Two weeks in and I already had a couple of challenges...
- Not being able to do the strength training program I want (no space and equipment) so I was left doing random things
- Some discouragement are already flying around
- I made a stupid decision to get zero drop shoes without properly prepping and now I hurt myself (nothing crazy though)
In the past, any of these would've been enough to make me go hmmmm and stop altogether. I make plans and I hate it when it gets disrupted.
But this time? I'm chugging along!
It's nice when you have a goal.
It's better when your goal isn't centered on losing weight but instead something better: running a marathon.
How I dealt with the stuff above:
- Strength training — I got a guide from Marathon Handbook about runner-specific training. It had simple, uncomplicated workouts that I could do even in a small space.
- Discouragements — "I'll still go run" is now my go-to phrase.
- Stupid Shoes — I'm switching back to my Ghost 14s and won't be messing around with new shoes for a while. I was a SalonPas queen last night — I did what I could to make my muscles happy and comfy. I'm also taking it easy today and focusing solely on upper body exercises.
Between now and the 2024 NYC Marathon are 18 months of training. There'll be more wrenches thrown in.
I'm ready to adapt and keep going!
